Bacillus subtilis natto (B. natto) affects other microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Studies have shown B. natto to enhance Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria (strains of bacteria that are normally found in the GIT). This effect benefits the normal balance and functions of Lactobacilli such as digestion and competing with bad microbes.
Bacillus subtilis natto has been shown to compete with disease causing bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens, Enterobacteriaceae and protozoa. B. natto produces substances that inhibit the attachment to the intestinal wall of these nasty microbes and inhibit their reproduction.
